Just two kilometres away from Agriturismo dei Gelsi there is the ancient town of San Gregorio da Sassola, named after pope Gregory the Great (540-604 AD), at that time lord of these lands. The town is perched on a tuff spur, giving to it a typically medieval aspect.
The structure of the town is divided in two parts: Borgo Vecchio ("Old Town"), having a characteristic medieval layout, is dominated by the Brancaccio castle, and the baroque "Borgo Pio", built, following the 1656, by cardinal Pius of Savoy. The history of San Gregorio da Sassola is strictly linked to Castello Brancaccio, a castle whose original nucleus dates back to the 10 th century.
The castle is well conserved.
